The Problems with Existing Bookmark Management Techniques:

 Organizing and Finding Bookmarks

The most common way to organize bookmarks is to use folders to categorize links. The shortcomings of this technique are:

Folders are slow to traverse, typically done by scrolling and mouse clicking.

Folders have to be carefully maintained to be useful. If bookmarks are not added to the correct folders, they are effectively useless, because you cannot locate them without searching.

Bookmarks do not always fit into predetermined folder hierarchies: they may fit into multiple folders or not fit into any.

Arbitrary groups of bookmarks cannot be displayed; the only way to view bookmarks is by the folder categorization.

In summary, you always have to follow the same path to a link, you have to constantly maintain your bookmark collection that proves to be a time consuming task, and sometimes you just can't find a category that characterizes the link.

Example: For instance, what if you wish to view your computer magazine bookmarks but your hierarchy groups all magazines together? On the other hand, if you separate the computer magazine bookmarks then browsing all your magazine bookmarks becomes difficult.

Powermarks Solution:

Powermarks doesn't use folders and a hierarchical file system for managing your bookmarks; instead, they are stored in a flat, nonhierarchical list. As a replacement for folders, Powermarks uses keywords and an instantaneous search facility to locate links. Rather than being a tacked on afterthought, the search engine in Powermarks is an intrinsic part of the list used to display your bookmarks. As you enter characters into the search field, the list of bookmarks narrows down to only the ones that contain the words that you have entered.

You can easily locate a link within a few keystrokes or mouse clicks because the powerful, incremental search engine can match partial words for quickly displaying the bookmarks.  It also supports logical operators (AND, OR, and NOT) which makes Powermarks much more powerful than any hierarchical bookmarks manager.

Example (Cont): Let's go back to the example mentioned above: Browsing your magazine bookmarks. To do this with Powermarks, you just type in "mag" and instantly all your magazine bookmarks are displayed (actually all non-magazine bookmarks disappear). To view your computer magazines, just type "comp mag" or "mag comp" and the list is further narrowed down to just computer magazines. In effect you are dynamically creating categories of bookmarks that fit your exact needs rather than being stuck with an inflexible hierarchy.

Besides typing, we have include several other means within Powermarks to help facilitate in locating bookmarks.  Macros, Tagged Keywords, exact string searches, and more than 15 different bookmark attributes can all be used to efficiently locate information.

 Adding Bookmarks

Because of folders, you ask yourself these questions every time you want to add a link:

Do you really want to add this bookmark and make your bookmark menu more crowded?

Where does this site fit into my bookmark hierarchy?

Do you even have a hierarchy?

How many times have you asked yourself these questions and decided not add a link only to find out three months later that you wish you knew where that site was?

Powermarks Solution:

With Powermarks, you have several options:

Choose to quickly add the bookmark and allow Powermarks to create a keyword set from the page's title.

Add a link with comments where you can add additional keywords to the bookmark to better help you remember the link or categorize it with existing bookmarks.

You can also choose to have Powermarks "fetch" a detailed description of the bookmark and build a extensive keyword set.

All of these options allow you to easily customize the link so when you want to retrieve it in the future, you can do so.

Example (Cont): With the computer magazine example in mind, lets say you are visiting a site that discusses the latest operating system under development.  Using Powermarks you can easily add the bookmark and attach a set of keywords (if they are not already there) such as "computer", "magazine", and "OS".

In the future when you want to return to the link, you remember it was in a computer magazine, so you could type "comp mag" and pick your link from the list.  Or you could just type in "OS" and choose your link from that list, or you could type in the whole sequence "comp mag os" and probably have you link narrowed down exclusively.

With Powermarks you don't ever have to hesitate to add a new bookmark again. Add the bookmark, attach a few keywords that describe the site, maybe add a tagged keyword for the general bookmark category, and you will never have to worry about finding it.  In three months when you want to go back to the site, just start typing the description you remember and you will instantaneously see the results.  Powermarks will quickly become your very own personalize search engine.

 Browsing groups of Bookmarks

With current bookmarking schemes, you just don't have the capability to easily view your complete set of bookmarks.

Powermarks Solution:

When you store bookmarks you can keep them in a single list or store them in separate categories. The first method works well for small lists, but even then it is difficult to browse similar bookmarked sites because all your sites are mixed together. If you took the time to create a hierarchy, then browsing is easier, but only if your hierarchy fits perfectly.

For instance, what if you wish to view your computer magazine bookmarks but your hierarchy groups all magazines together? On the other hand, if you separate the computer magazine bookmarks then browsing all your magazine bookmarks becomes difficult. What if you could dynamically create 'groups' of bookmarks that fit your exact requirements at any given time? Powermarks can!

 Portability of Your Bookmarks

With the native bookmarking interface of a browser, you can't take you bookmarks with you, nor can you open a bookmark in a different browser.

Powermarks Solution:

We created NetSync, a feature that allows Powermarks to communicate with the Kaylon NetSync server to store bookmark collections on the Internet. This allows you to backup bookmarks and synchronize collections from various locations, such as work and home, and access bookmarks from any computer.  You can even access your NetSync account remotely and view you links on a web page.

NetSync is safe and secure in addition to being completely private. We derive absolutely no data from this service or its usage, it is provided strictly as a feature and convenience for Powermarks users. Best of all, it is FREE for all Powermarks users, even if you are just evaluating the software.

Powermarks also works with the three most popular browsers, Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Opera, so you can open any page in any browser.

Why Powermarks is different from other URL managers
  • Powermarks is extremely small and fast. A bookmark manager shouldn't take up as much memory and/or computer resources as an entire browser does!

  • Powermarks is intuitive and easy to use. Powermarks automatically imports your existing bookmarks when run for the first time so you do not have to waste any time reentering them.

  • Powermarks stores your bookmarks in a standard HTML file so they can be easily accessed by other programs. No proprietary databases which are difficult to use and risk becoming corrupted.

  • Automatic identification of pages which have changed or no longer reachable.

  • Powerful, fast and easy to use search engine that is an intrinsic part of the program.

  Some more cool features
  • NetSync - access your bookmarks from anywhere on the web.

  • Intelligent status checking of web pages can automatically check if any bookmarks have changed since you last visited them, it  ignores advertising banners and other extraneous tags.

  • Selectively display bookmarks using a powerful incremental search engine with features such as logical operators (AND,OR, NOT).

  • Import Bookmarks from existing HTML bookmark files. Makes merging multiple bookmark files trivial as Powermarks automatically filters out duplicate bookmarks.

  • Import links from any HTML files.

  • Import Microsoft Explorer Favorites, Netscape Bookmarks, and Opera Hotlist.

  • Export your links to multiple formats

  • Much, much more....

 Trying Powermarks

All Powermarks files are contained in a single directory so un-installing Powermarks is easy (not that you would ever want to!). It even comes with an un-install program. Powermarks does not make ANY changes to Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera or any other program on your computer so there is no need to worry if Powermarks will disturb your current setup.  Download it now!
