Bookmark lists are a good way to keep track of where you've been and what sites you like the most. But sometimes
finding a particular site on your lists can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Kaylon Technologies has created
the $24.95 Powermarks, Version 2.02, to help you find exactly what you're looking for.
Powermarks sits in your Windows 95 Taskbar, so you can pull it up at any time. The program creates a list of all
your favorite URLs, organizing them alphabetically. You can import your existing bookmark folders from Internet
Explorer, Netscape Navigator, or a previous version of Powermarks when you first start the program. You can browse
through the list manually or search among your bookmarks using the program's proprietary engine. The search function
sits at the top of the Powermarks interface. As you type a word or phrase in the search box letter by letter, the
program responds on the fly with a list of URLs that fit your criteria.
In order to facilitate your searches, Powermarks lets you add any keywords or phrases to each URL's entry. You
can also add a description in the form of a paragraph. Then, when you're searching for a site, the program will
not only look at the URL's title, but also view the information you've added. In this way you can create groupings
of URLs. For example, you can add the word computer to a listing and instantaneously pull up all computer-related
sites by typing it into the program. There's also a keyword dictionary that has indexed the sites for you. You
can double-click on one of the words to see your results immediately.
Two flag icons--Fast Add or Add Powermark--sit on the main toolbar to let you add a site to the program. The Fast
Add option will automatically add whatever site is live in your browser. The Add Powermark option lets you manually
add a URL to your list and customize the entry by including a description and keywords.
You can also use Powermarks as a rudimentary off-line notification program. You can have the program go out and
check to see if changes have been made to one or all of your bookmarked pages. If the program finds a change, it
will notify you in the form of a customizable icon. If you want to check if a page has changed without adding it
to your watched list, you can right-click on its entry and select Status Check. You can also click on the Start
Checking option under the Powermarks menu.
Since Powermarks doesn't let you formally group or sort your bookmarks, it won't appeal to everyone. But you have
a large list of URLs and need to search them often, Powermarks is a good tool.
