Q: Does Powermarks send anything back to Kaylon Technologies when it is installed or used?
A:  Absolutely, positively No. Powermarks never communicates with us without you being aware of what it is doing and certainly never passes any personal or private information back to us. Because of the unethical behavior by companies, we want to make it clear that Powermarks does nothing of the sort. More information about privacy and network traffic can be found in Section 1.1, Privacy and Network Traffic.

Q: My firewall reports that Powermarks is continually sending out ICMP packets? What are these and why is it doing this?
A: ICMP packets are used by many ping programs to check for the responsiveness of remote computers. Powermarks uses them to check for the presence of an Internet connection. Powermarks sets the Time-to-Live (TTL) value of the packets to 3 so that they never reach the destination machine, but they do inform Powermarks that at least 3 'hops' are available and hence, a network connection is probably present. Windows does offer a couple of other methods for detecting a network connection, but they are not 100% reliable and therefore Powermarks uses packets in addition to the other methods. The destination for the ICMP packets is a Microsoft IP address, chosen mainly because it is a popular site and should be in routing tables. Keep in mind that the packets never actually get to the Microsoft machine because the TTL is set too low. Even if they did, nothing would be affected because they just look like a ping. The IP address along with the TTL value can be set in the pm35.ini file. Sending of ICMP packets can be turned off by un-checking the option "Use ICMP packets to check for network connection" in the Status Checking section of the Options dialog.

The use of ICMP packets can disabled by un-checking the option "Use ICMP packets to check for network connection" located in the status checking section of the Options dialog window; see Section 8.1.8, Status Checking for details.

Q: Why does my license number not work?
A: Some characters look identical with certain fonts so it is important that you copy and paste the license ID rather than trying to type it in manually. In almost all Windows programs, Ctrl-C copies highlighted text and Ctrl-V pastes. Versions 1.0, 2.0 and 3.X all use different licenses so a 2.0 license will not work with version 3.0. All minor versions use the same licenses, so a 2.0 license will work with version 2.04 for example.

Q: When I have multiple Internet Explorer Windows open, why does Powermarks not always use the topmost window when I try to add a bookmark?
A: This is a bug in Internet Explorer. A word around provided by Powermarks can be enabled by doing the following:

Select Options from the Powermarks View menu.
Click on Internet Explorer in the tree view on the left hand side of the Options dialog.
Set the Communication Method to COM or Direct.
Press the OK button.

Q: The Add and Fast Add commands do not work, what do I do?
A: The most likely cause is because either the browser is not running, Powermarks is not correctly configured for the browser, or the Preferred Browser is not correctly set. See Section 8.1.12, Browser Configuration, for details.

Q: Can I add Bookmarks from 2 or more browsers?
A: Powermarks 3.5 will attempt to retrieve the URL from the preferred browser. If this fails, Powermarks will then check if any other browsers are running and use those instead. Alternately, you can use the "Add from..." commands in the Bookmarks menu to add a bookmark from a specific browser.

Q: I have multiple browsers running and when I try to open a bookmark in Netscape or Internet Explorer, it appears in Opera instead, why?
A: Opera emulates the Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer interface that Powermarks uses to display URLs. What this means is that Powermarks thinks it is talking with Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, but instead it is talking with Opera. The only solution with Netscape Navigator is to manually copy and paste the URL or to not run the two browsers at the same time. With Internet Explorer, enable the Bypass DDE option to solve the problem.

Opera emulates Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer so that programs that are not written to accommodate Opera will still work with it.

Q: How do I search for a URL?
A: Click on the toolbar button to select the Exact String Search function and then click on the toolbar button to display a drop down list of fields that you can search. Check the URL field and remove the check marks from the other fields. Now type in part of a URL and Powermarks will display the bookmarks that match in the main window. See Section 10.5.2, Exact String Searching, for details.

Q: Why do some entries always report "Bad URL" even when in the site is up?
A: Powermarks relies on the web server to return the correct response. Generally this works correctly, however, there are some sites that are improperly maintained and have incorrectly configured servers. In this case, it is usually best to just turn off status checking for the URL in question.

Q: Help, all my bookmarks just disappeared, how do I get them back?
A: Powermarks creates two backup files provided the Create Backup File option is set, see Section 8.1.2 for details on setting this option. The files have the same name as the bookmark file they are backing up, but have extensions of .ba0 and .ba1 as opposed to .htm. To reload these files perform the following steps:

1. Select New from the File menu
2. Select Import from the File menu
3. In the Files of Type field, select *.*
4. Highlight the file with the same name as your bookmark file (typically pm30.htm) but with the extension of .ba0.
5. Press the OK button.

If all the bookmarks appear, then proceed to step 6, otherwise repeat steps 2 through 5, but this time load the backup file with the .ba1 extension.

    6. Select Save As from the File menu and type in pm30.htm as the filename
    7. Press the OK button.

If your bookmarks were not displayed then you must restore your bookmarks from a permanent backup copy.

Q: Why is the help file in HTML and not WinHelp like most other Windows programs?
A: A couple reasons:

  1. HTML currently has better editing tools available and the gap is only widening.
  2. We can put the manual online for easy viewing; no explicit downloading required.
  3. The new help engine from Microsoft is HTML based, we can easily move to this when we feel it is ready.
  4. We can leverage a single authoring environment for both web pages and product documentation.

When we feel the new Microsoft HTML Help engine mature and universally available, we will migrate to it.

Q: Any plans to integrate Powermarks into Netscape, Internet Explorer or Opera?
A: Powermarks purposely does not integrate itself into Netscape or Opera so that it maintains maximum compatibility with all browsers and versions. Powermarks 3.5 does have toolbar integration with IE.

Because Powermarks is a small program, you can leave it running all the time. When not in use, just minimize it and it will display only a little PM icon in the bottom right of the screen. When you are using your browser and decide to add a bookmark, right click on that icon and select either "Fast Add" or "Add" to add a bookmark into Powermarks. To view your Powermarks, just double click on the icon.

Q: Do you have a Linux version?
A: Currently we do not, however, we are actively considering the possibility. Let us know if you are interested..

Q: Do you have a Macintosh or Windows 3.1 version?
A: Currently we do not, nor do we have plans for one. If this changes, we will make information available on our web site.
