How to Convert to Powermarks

This section walks through an example of how someone would convert their bookmarks collection into Powermarks. Aside from just importing the links, it shows how someone can use the features of Powermarks to best meet their needs.

Below is the sample bookmark collection that will be converted transferred to Powermarks. It has many of the same properties that yours bookmarks might have, such as duplicate links, frequently accessed sites, and a folder hierarchy:

 Properties of this Collection
This collection contains four folders: Newspapers, Football, Minnesota Vikings, and Search.
The links for My Yahoo and Google are stored at the top of the list because they are frequently visited.
Several links are duplicated in this collection because they fall in two different categories as shown below with the matching colors.

 Importing your current bookmarks

Powermarks has an automatic import facility built in to import links from Internet Explore, Netscape, and Opera.  To access this feature either choose the Import option under the File menu and point directly to the bookmarks you want to import, or use the Import Wizard, also under the File menu, and let Powermarks locate your bookmark files.

For more information on importing bookmarks, refer to Importing in the help files.

When you complete your import, Powermarks will look like this:

 What Keywords should be Tagged?
As explained in the Dictionary Window portion of Hints and Tips, Tagged Keywords are used to mark important keywords.

We would identify four such keywords from this collection: Newspapers, Football, Search, and Minnesota.

Newspapers, Football, and Search are important keywords because are category titles.  Each of the bookmarks in those folders before import will automatically get the folder name added to the keyword subset for that bookmark.

Minnesota is viewed as an important keyword because it refers to a common interest and theme for this bookmarks collection.  Two Newspapers and two specific sites would contain this keyword.

Tag these four and choose the option to "Display only Tagged Keywords" if you like.  The resulting Dictionary window would look like:

RESULT: Now when you click on one of these easy to find Tagged Keywords, the list of bookmarks displayed in the main window will be narrowed down without you ever having to type a single key!

 What macros should I create?

As explained earlier in Hints and Tips, Macros are a means of automating a redundant process.  What redundant processes are in this bookmark collection?

As stated earlier, the My Yahoo and Google bookmarks are both frequently visited links.  Therefore, instead of always having to type something in the search field, you would want to create an easy means of finding these links.  That is why you you would want to create a URL Macro.  Then, instead of having to enter a search criteria, you can just launch these web pages at a click of the button!

In this example, one one nested folder is shown "Minnesota Vikings" that lies within the "Football" folder.  In your bookmark collection you might have several folders nested inside of one another, therefore you might repeatedly find yourself traversing the folders to get to your destination.  Let assume that the user commonly has to type in the phrase: "Football Minnesota Vikings" because the bookmark collection is large and only one keyword will not reach the destination.  This search criteria could be entered in as a Keyword String Macro so the user would not have to repeatedly type in phrase.

After creating these macros, the Macro window would look like:

RESULT: You can now access My Yahoo and Google with one click.  You can also enter in the long search string "Football Minnesota Vikings" the same way by clicking on the Keywords String Macro.

 What is the real benefit?

One word can sum up Powermarks biggest benefit: Speed.  We created Powermarks as a utility that you can customize to meet your own requirements.  This was just a suggest implementation of how to use Powermarks, you might choose different ways, but Powermarks will become your own personal search engine that will help you navigate your sphere of the web faster.  It will quickly sort through the masses of information you collect and find the destination you desire, no matter of the size of your bookmarks collection.
