| Importing and
Exporting Chapter 7 |
|
Powermarks can import bookmarks from any of following sources:
- Any HTML file
- Netscape Bookmark file
- Powermarks 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 file
- Microsoft Favorites
- Mozilla Bookmarks file
When Powermarks imports bookmarks, it checks for existing bookmarks with identical URLs and does not import the duplicates. This simplifies maintenance of your bookmark list because you do not have to manually search for and remove duplicates.
| 7.1 Importing HTML Files |
This section details how to import bookmarks from HTML formatted files which includes both the Powermarks and Netscape formats.
Select Import from the File menu to display a File Open dialog. Use this dialog to locate the file to be imported and click on the OK button.
When Powermarks imports bookmarks from a Netscape file, it creates keywords for the bookmarks based on their name and folder location. If a folder is named "search engines", just type "sea eng" (short for "search engines") to display those bookmarks.
| 7.2 Importing Favorites |
Favorites are Microsoft's term for bookmarks and are stored as individual files in a hierarchy of folders (directories) on your hard disk. To import Favorites, Powermarks needs to know which folder to start searching in. Powermarks will then traverse this folder and all sub-folders looking for Favorites, and adding each one it finds. Provided a duplicate does not already exist in your list.
To import Favorites, select Import Favorites from the File menu and the dialog shown below will be displayed. Powermarks attempts to automatically locate and highlight the Favorites folder, as shown below, but sometimes will fail with nonstandard installations. In this case, you will have to manually browse for the Favorites folder or just highlight the top folder of a disk drive and have Powermarks search it in its entirety.
After highlighting the Favorites folder, click on the OK button to start importing Favorites. When Powermarks has completed importing the Favorites, it will display the number imported in the status bar.
| 7.3 Import Wizard |
Select Import Wizard from the File menu to display the Import Wizard dialog.
This dialog allows you to easily import the following formats:
In most cases, the Import Wizard will import all the above (if they exist on your computer) without any intervention other than clicking on the Next and Finish buttons.
| 7.4 Exporting Bookmarks |
Select Export from the File menu to export bookmarks. The Export Powermarks dialog window has two tabs, Format and Options.

Click on the folder button located to the right of this field to browse the disk for a filename.- Export Range
- Use this option to specify if you want to export all the bookmarks in the current file or just the bookmarks that are selected in the Powermarks list. If no bookmarks are selected in the main bookmark list, Powermarks will not allow you to check the Selected option

- Sort by
- Use this drop down list to select the field you wish to use to sort the bookmarks when they are exported.
- Fields to Export

Select and deselect fields by clicking the left mouse button while the mouse cursor is over a check box.- Sort Order
- A-Z sorts in alphabetical order
Z-A sorts in reverse alphabetical order
