Getting Started Chapter 4
|
4.1 Starting Powermarks
Powermarks can be started by either:
4.2 Registration
The Internet version of Powermarks defaults to a time limited demo that requires a license ID for unrestricted use. This ID is provided at the time of purchase to the customer and needs to be entered into Powermarks. Customers who have purchased the retail version of Powermarks do not have to enter a license.
Select Enter License from the Help menu to display the license dialog window. Enter your name and license ID exactly as provided. It is usually best to copy and paste it because some characters look identical with certain fonts. In almost all Windows programs, Ctrl-C copies the highlighted text to the clipboard and Ctrl-V pastes it.
It is generally a good idea to save the e-mail or HTML document that contains your license ID. If you lose your license ID, please contact us for a replacement.
4.3 Quick Configuration
Powermarks recognizes which browsers are installed on a computer, but can be confused by a nonstandard configuration. A possible cause for this is if remnants of previous browser versions are still on your hard disk.
If double-clicking on a bookmark does not open the page in your browser and instead displays a message "Unable to communicate with browser," you will have to manually update the browser configuration, otherwise, you may skip to the next section.
Select Options from the View menu and click on the Browser tab. Four tabs will be displayed, one each for Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera, NetCaptor, and Mozilla. Click on the tab of the browser that you wish to use with Powermarks and make sure the Program Location field is correct and the Preferred Browser item is checked.
See Section 8.1.12 for detailed instructions regarding browser configuration.
This section is only for users whose connection to the Internet requires use of either a proxy server or a firewall. If you do not know if you are in this category, chances are that it is safe to skip this section.
A network proxy is an intermediate computer that sits between your browser and the Internet. It may be in the form of a firewall that exists for security purposes or a system that caches browser requests with the intention of speeding up access to frequently retrieved pages. In either case, Powermarks must be configured to use the Proxy server so that it can properly check the status of bookmarked pages. See Section 5.4 for details regarding Status Checking.
Select Options from the View menu and click on the Proxies tab to display Proxy and Firewall options. To enable the use of a Proxy or Firewall, select the Use Proxy option and set the Server and Port fields. See Section 8.1.10 for details.
4.4 Adding Bookmarks
There are two easy methods for adding the current browser page to the Powermarks bookmark list:
Click the
button or select Add from the Powermarks menu when your browser is at a site you want to bookmark. This displays the Powermarks Properties dialog with the current browser site filled in.
Click the
toolbar button or select Fast Add from the Powermarks menu when your browser is at a site you want to bookmark. This is the same as the Add command described above, but bypasses the Powermarks Properties menu and adds the bookmark immediately to the bookmark file. This is useful when you want to add a bookmark quickly so that it does not interrupt your browsing.
If a site has already been bookmarked, the Add command will display the bookmark that already exists and will not add a duplicate. The Fast Add command will do nothing.
To display a blank Properties dialog so that you can manually add a bookmark, hold down the Shift key when clicking on the Add bookmark toolbar button.
4.5 Bookmarking Local Files
Powermarks is not only limited to bookmarking websites, but it can also can be used for file management.
To create a bookmark to a file, drag and drop the file from Windows Explorer into the main window of Powermarks. Instead of associating a website URL with the new bookmark, Powermarks will associate a file path instead. The other properties associated with the bookmark, such as keywords, notes, and rating, can be edited and handled just like those for websites. Double clicking on a file bookmarks will open the file just as if you had double-clicked on the file in Windows Explorer.
Creating bookmarks to files proves to be especially valuable when you have commonly accessed files or large directory trees that have to be traversed regularly, such as those on network drives. For example, Powermarks ideal for managing MP3 collections because it provides an easy way to catalog and search the files.
4.6 Searching for Bookmarks
Powermarks has two types of searches, Keyword and Exact String. The search type is specified by pressing one of the following toolbar buttons:
Press for powerful and fast keyword searching. You may type in multiple words such as "cool sites."
Press to search for an exact string. This search has no concept of words, it just searches for exactly what is typed, character by character. Press the toolbar button to specify which bookmark fields should be searched.
More information regarding searching can be found in Section 5.1, Searching, and Section 10.5, Advanced Searching.
4.7 Deleting Bookmarks
Highlight the bookmark(s) you wish to delete and press the delete key. If you wish to undo the delete operation, select Undo from the Edit Menu.
4.8 Opening a Bookmark
Just double-click on a bookmark to display the page in the browser. If the web browser is not running, Powermarks will start it automatically.
If the browser does not load the bookmark, see Section 4.3.1 and Section 8.1.12 for information on configuring Powermarks to work with your browser.
